I encounter the most incredible, heart warming or thought-provoking individuals, communities and initiatives whenever I'm on shoots. Shoots never go the way they were planned-- they always go better! Every "delay" or "mishap" tends to bring me closer to truths that remind me why the story needs to be told. It was the biggest, longest and most challenging project I had been commissioned for at the time - filming a 30 minute episode for CNN Inside Africa. After 8 consecutive days of being in the field, I thought I would break. And then, in the middle of her interview, Haja broke into tears when she said "I feel like I am living my grandmother's wildest dreams". And I knew then, that I had to keep going.

Khadija was not the focus of the business story I was filming for a CNN African business program called Marketplace Africa. She didn’t even make it on to my rough cut, nor the final piece produced by the show’s editor. But she was the one who made my year.
